Standard contracts include renewal options at the end of the term and provisions for early termination, which are agreed at the start. By the way, if your circumstances change mid-term, we'd rather have an early conversation about restructuring the engagement than wait for a hard endpoint.
For project-based engagements, the term is defined by the deliverable, with end-of-project provisions set out in the proposal.
